One of the great things about Nintendo consoles is that they use very little electricity, saving you money compared to the PS5 or Series X. That said, lower power draw typically means the system isn’t as graphically impressive. With that being the case, the Switch 2 should have a higher power requirement compared to the original Switch to accomodate better graphics. And, according to a new rumor, that’s what’s happening.
Laura Kate Dale has shared a new image of the bottom of the Switch 2 dock. She states she’s learned the Switch 2 will ship with a 60W charger compared to the 39W charger that shipped with the original Switch system. While this charger will use more electricity and cost more money, it’ll also be able to power better-looking games.
Unfortunately, this also means your existing Switch charger will likely not be compatible with Nintendo’s successor.
The Switch 2 may also be using Samsung’s 8nm process which is supposedly not very power efficient according to Digital Foundry. This could also contribute to the need for higher wattage.
You can also tell by the picture that the input voltage is 20V compared to the original’s 15V. This may be to accomodate more accessories connected to the system’s supposed top USB-C port.
