The Nintendo Switch has officially overtaken the mighty PlayStation 2 in hardware sales within the United States, according to a recent report from Circana. This is a monumental achievement for Nintendo’s most recent console worthy of celebration.
As of writing, the Switch has sold 46.6 million units in the U.S., making it the second-best-selling gaming system behind only the Nintendo DS in lifetime sales.
Switch sales in the U.S. dropped by 3 percent year-over-year, a slight decline for a console approaching its eighth anniversary since launch in March 2017, especially considering its successor is approaching in early-to-mid 2025.
Worldwide, the Nintendo Switch has amassed lifetime sales of 146 million units. While it still lags behind the Nintendo DS, which stands at 154 million units, the Switch is edging closer to claiming the title of Nintendo’s best-selling platform.
However, the PlayStation 2 remains the all-time leader in worldwide sales, with Sony recently claiming it sold 160 million units (watch our parody video below about that “interesting” claim).
Break out the champaigne, Nintendo fans. It’s a good day to be a supporter of the Nintendo Switch!
