The Expansion Pack for Switch Online has never been a great value. It added N64 and GBA games, and some DLC perks, but it never seemed worth the huge increase in price over the standard Nintendo Switch Online service. Soon, however, the Expansion might just be worth it.
During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo announced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games. Basically, these are paid upgrades of older Switch games like Kirby and the Forgotten Land. The pricing of these upgrades for existing owners is unknown, but it seems like at least some of these upgrades will be free for Expansion Pack users.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members get access to the following upgrade packs at no additional cost! You must have the physical or digital version of the game to download its upgrade pack. Active membership required.
The game upgrades mentioned to be free for Expansion Pack users were Breath of the Wild and its sequel Tears of the Kingdom. There’s no doubt more games will be revealed later.
However, it’s important to note that not all upgrades will cost money for anyone. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which desperately needed fixes, will get a free upgrade for Switch 2 owners. You won’t need the Expansion Pack.
Paid upgrades (so far) include Super Mario Party Jamboree, Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4 Beyond.
