The original creator of Minecraft, Markus “Notch” Persson, has taken to Twitter/X to announce a “spiritual sequel” to the enormously popular Minecraft game.
The billionaire ran a poll on his X account asking fans which game they wanted from him. The options were a roguelike mixed with a dungeon crawler, and a spiritual sequel to Minecraft. Can you guess which game won?
Yes, with over 81% of the vote, the Minecraft successor was victorious. And, true to his word (so far), Notch confirmed he will be working on this successor.
Note that Notch sold Minecraft to Microsoft, and he hasn’t been a part of the Mojang development team for 11 years due to Internet controversy. With that said, any resemblance to Minecraft will have to be done carefully to avoid lawsuits. Notch cannot use the name Minecraft 2 or steer too close to the “characters” (I guess) or other elements of the original game.
(To be honest, Notch’s comments on X border on careless in my view, especially using the name Minecraft 2 to promote a new game. But, he is so rich that I suppose he doesn’t care).
NintendoUp’s Take
This news story is a classic example of something I don’t care about, but have to post anyway because there’s a billion Minecraft fans out there. I’ve never liked the game, and I kinda hate that it infected Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Steve made it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sorry, not sorry.
But—if you happen to like Minecraft, this should be great news for you, and I’m happy for you.
Minecraft is available on Nintendo Switch, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and a bunch of other platforms. It has sold over 300 million copies globally, making it the best-selling video game ever released (wow, that’s a lot of children).
Oh, and in other Notch news:
Keep it classy, folks.
