The Nintendo 64, released in 1996, is now 28 years old. Surprisingly, despite its old age, there are still hidden secrets within its hardware waiting to be found.
Famous N64 modder Kaze has been exploring and exploiting the system for years to try and find such secrets. He recently discovered another hidden gem—more accessible RAM in both the N64 and the Expansion Pak. Notably, only one game, Majora’s Mask, utilizes this RAM. That might help explain why Majora’s Mask is such a special game.
Kaze delves into the hidden RAM, explaining its location, functionality, and potential applications. It’s evident that most developers who worked on the N64 were unaware of this RAM or were (understandably) unwilling to go through the necessary steps to utilize it.
What N64 game do you think could’ve made use of more RAM? I’m thinking, obviously, Ocarina of Time. How about you?
